Level 1C is second in the series. The text and the illustrations are kept simple and distraction free as in level 1B, but the texts are significantly more complex. They are still simplified in terms of vocabulary and number of words, but single sentences and short paragraphs are characteristic of level 1C. There is an even divide between prose and document texts. There are three questions per text which, for the most part, ask the reader to make a direct match between what the question is asking and the words in the text.
Readers’ Skills
At this level, readers can understand words in text and relate those to words in nearby text; this vocabulary is still concrete and common. On top of being able to interpret short texts, readers can select from limited choices; these selections are based on understanding meaning rather than relying on standard formats. Additionally, readers at this level can figure out where to put information on a form. As such, a standard text at this level is an entry document: a form that the reader needs to complete with common information such as a phone number or name.
